Getting Started With (And Acing) Poetry Writing

-Avanti Nayal
Jamnabai Narsee School

The process of writing poetry is as personal and unique as the poem itself

Writing poems may seem daunting to some, while it may seem like a cakewalk to the rest. Irrespective of which category you belong to, I hope you’re able to take something away from this article (it sounds utterly fancy, but in reality, I am typing this on my laptop while sitting in my pj’s).

Poetry writing is as enjoyable as it is cathartic. How one perceives poetry (or any kind of literature for that matter) is highly subjective. Obviously, even the process of poetry writing varies from person to person. Many a time, people have asked me “how do you write poems?” Or “how to write good poetry?” This question usually stumps me because there is no one size fits all answer to this question. In order to understand what works best for you, you must start writing and figure it out for yourself.

In this article, I wouldn’t want to give you a step by step guide to write good poems. Instead, I would like to discuss a few things that you must focus on in order to zero down on the process that works best for you. Do bear in mind that the only way to get started with poetry writing is to get started with poetry writing- pick up the pen that has been lying next to your bed for ages and start scribbling things down. You will figure it out along the way, but you need to take the first step in order to get somewhere!

The 3 questions you must ask yourself :

Why do I want to write poetry?

Some of my contemporaries write poems merely for fun, some write it because it is a cathartic experience and few of them write in order to publish their work someday- all of these choices are equally valid and significant. It is important to introspect and figure out a purpose( it doesn’t have to be a lofty one, frivolous ones work too – as long as you’re happy ). In my opinion, writing for a purpose not only takes the quality of the poetry up a notch but also helps people stay motivated throughout the process of writing – I assure you, it can be quite tedious at times. Indulging in poetry writing for fun is vastly different from writing a weekly/monthly column. So before you embark on this wondrous journey, pause for a moment and ask yourself the questions that philosophers have been asking themselves for ages- what’s the purpose of this?

What kind of an external setting do I need in order to write a poem?

Honestly, If you took me to Willy Wonka’s factory, I’d probably pen down the best poem I have ever written, but alas, that is not to be! Jokes aside, where we write and when we write matters more than we can fathom. Case in point, I am writing this piece at 3 am whilst listening to ‘chandni raat’ by Ali Sethi. I am most productive at night – Mumbai exudes a serene and soothing vibe at night, and as someone who is sometimes bothered by the cacophony of the city, a calm and peaceful environment is essential for me if I am to write. On the other hand, my friend simply can’t digest the fact that I prefer writing at night to writing during the day. Her groggy and delirious self cannot do even an iota of work after sunset. Some of the best poems that I have written have been written in gardens, quaint cafes and libraries. Definitely do pay attention to the kind of environment that appeals to the writer in you

Which topics do I usually gravitate towards?

This would be particularly relevant to you if you intend on publishing your work. If you tend to gravitate towards a particular topic often and/or if the best poems that you’ve ever written focus on a particular theme, then congrats, you have found your forte! For the record, there is absolutely no harm in not having a forte. However, if you do have one, it is easier to focus on your strengths whilst honing your skills in order to work on your weaknesses. Exploring the various nuances of the theme of your choice is perhaps as intellectually stimulating as stepping out of your comfort zone, and maintaining a balance between the two helps an artist grow in every way possible.

Bonus post-script- my experience and a piece of my heart

The first poem I ever wrote –
On moving on

I am leaving behind all the memories I made,
And slowly but eventually,
They all shall fade.

But the feeling!Ah the feeling!
That shall always sail in my heart
Grieving but dancing
Crying but singing

But just as the sun always shines
And the wind always blows
The heart always pines
And as it pines,it seeks.

New memories shall be your bait
Fresh beginnings are coming your way
A fresh start awaits
Let the heart not grieve!
For a fresh start awaits,a fresh start awaits….

I started writing approximately 4 years ago, and though I am still an amateur, I was a complete novice back then. One fine day, I just picked up my diary and wrote down everything that came to mind at that moment. It was a process full of trial and error, but eventually, it worked out well for me. In the process of writing poetry (and figuring out which method of poetry writing works best for me), I became better acquainted with myself. There is no 5 step guide to poetry writing that will work for every single person in the world. The best way is to figure it out for yourself by starting small and paying close attention to what entices you the most. Most of all, do not forget to have fun!

Keep writing, keep shining.

Entrepreneur Skills – The Three-Time World Cup Winner Turned Entrepreneur – Ricky Ponting

The Three-Time World Cup Winner Turned Entrepreneur – Ricky Ponting

“I think sports and businesses have a lot of parallels and I think I have a good grasp of what makes businesses successful”, says Ricky Ponting – the three-time world cup winner. The former captain of the Australian Cricket Team, who is regarded as one of the best captains to ever play the sport, has now turned his eyes toward the field of entrepreneurship.

Apart from being the head coach of successful IPL teams like the Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, the former skipper boasts a 500+ crore net worth! The ‘Punter’ also has several multi-million real estate investments to his name and has even made it to the board of a reputed sports recruitment company – NSR Australia. He believes he is ready to take on new challenges outside of sports and make his mark in the world of business and entrepreneurship.

The Former Athlete Turned Businessman Trend:

It is not unheard of for pro-athletes to turn out to be great business owners or entrepreneurs because the very qualities that make a successful sportsperson also form the foundation of a great business leader. Athletes that compete at a very high level adapt to performing under a lot of pressure and in extremely competitive environments. Michael Jordan, the star basketballer is the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats basketball team and is the face of Nike’s Air Jordans; Venus Williams, the former world number 1 in tennis, owns her own fashion line and co-owns the Miami Dolphins football team.

Numerous Indian athletes have also set foot into the world of business! The Haryana Hurricane – Kapil Dev –  boasts a 5% stake in Zicom Electronics along with a luxury hotel in Chandigarh. India’s very own captain cool – MS Dhoni – co-owns the ISL Champion team, Chennaiyin FC, along with his lifestyle brand, Seven. The Indian Captain and run machine – Virat Kohli – also has a long list of successful businesses and brands built by him including Wrogn, One8, FC Goa, etc.

Why Do Pro-Athletes make Great Entrepreneurs?

Ponting, a legend of the sport, has always had a knack for business and believes that the work ethic and the hard work that comes naturally to top athletes like him will bring him success in building businesses. Ricky has made the headlines again recently after he made his first major move since 2012 when he retired from Test Cricket by launching Ponting Wines – a manufacturer of a premium range of fine wines.

So what is it that makes these athletes successful in the field of business?

  1. Discipline: Training diligently for 5-8 hours a day and following a fixed regime for years requires superhuman will and mental strength. The training required to remain a top athlete makes a person more confident and prepared to take any challenge head-on!
  2. Teamwork: Leaders are made by the team behind them which is why building/working with the right team is a necessity if one strives for business success. All team sports require every single member to function as one single unit which is a practice that carries on to building a skilled and reliable workforce as well.
  3. Learning from Failure: This has to be one of the most critical qualities an entrepreneur must possess as failure molds people into success stories. In any sport, defeat is inevitable and top athletes are well versed in dealing with situations where one is faced with a roadblock. Therefore, they learn from it and come back as a better and more experienced individual.

Conclusion

Every year we hear stories about renowned athletes breaking into the world of business by engaging in roles both inside and outside the sports industry. The sports industry which is valued at $350+ billion dollars is flourishing and has created multiple roles and opportunities across areas – marketing, media, management, etc. Are you a sports enthusiast? Do you want to explore the business aspect of this multi-faceted industry? If yes, then apply for Big Red Education’s – Business of Sports 101 and combine your passion for sports with business!

5 Ways To Demonstrate Leadership In College Applications

Great leadership usually starts young. It comes with a positive attitude and a desire to make a difference. Admission and scholarship review committees at colleges are always on the lookout for leadership qualities in young students. After all, investing in a bright future is beneficial for the college too.

Extra-curricular and co-curricular activities form an integral part of the learning experience. It would not be wrong to say that they are the nurturing grounds for qualities and traits that ultimately determine how the future shapes for a young student. Becoming a part of activities and events is a good way to start involving yourself in leadership building exercises.

If you want your college application to stand out and impress, you need to start the leadership demonstration process early.

Start Early

Talk to your mentors, parents, friends and siblings about the activities and the leadership opportunity each activity offers. Involve yourself in the activities. That is the best way to identify what appeals to you most. Identifying the right activity and the opportunity it presents in the future is a strategic decision that you have to take early. The sooner you start, the more time you will have to work your way to the top. A college application shows the activity you were a part of and the level of commitment you dedicated towards it.

Let your passion to drive you forward

When you have found an activity that appeals to you, dive into it wholeheartedly! Be it sports, arts, robotics, theatre etc., discover your passion and rise to the top in that. Excel at your activity – an application does look more attractive if it has the words ‘President’, ‘Captain’, or ‘Editor’ on it!

Be enthusiastic. Volunteer.

Enthusiasm plays a major role in sustaining and excelling in your chosen activity. Legitimate and sincere interest in a subject is the key to achieving success. Volunteer for tasks – do not hesitate to put your hand up! An activity that keeps you enthusiastic and active will likely earn you consideration for a leadership role. While leadership is often recognised and valued, the path to the mantle is also equally important – it is this journey that the admissions office will look for in your college application as it conveys your true level of enthusiasm.

Rise to the occasion

The best way to demonstrate your abilities as a leader is by becoming one. Do not be afraid to accept responsibility and rise to the occasion. Value everyone’s ideas and thoughts, but make sure that your contributions to the group are recognised. A college application holds more value if it acknowledges and recognises your leadership and contributions.

Know how to tell your story

Colleges look for leaders because they see in them the drive to succeed. Leadership is not just about the position – it is a story about what you achieved in that position. Your role in the entire process and your problem solving skill and collaborative efforts is what the admissions office wants to hear. Putting down in words the salient moments of your leadership journey requires skill and clear articulation of thoughts. Join a workshop that addresses the important aspects of college applications – the essay writing and resume building. Having a story to tell is no good if you do not know how to narrate one!

How many hours of sleep do we need to ace our exams?

How many hours of sleep do we need to ace our exams?

Are you giving exams on less than 8 hours of sleep like me? Stop now!

Most high school and college students, much like myself, often stay up all night studying or sleeping extremely late thinking that the more hours of studying they squeeze in, the better we will do on our exams. However, this is a misconception.

All-nighters do nothing good for our memory and retention. Harvard Medical School psychologist Matt Walker agrees that “practice makes perfect”, “but having a night’s rest after practicing might make you even better.” Consequently, he enforces that memory needs those full 8 hours of sleep. Pulling all-nighters can impair focus, decrease immunity, memory and cognitive function, increase the risk of mental health issues and anxiety, and more. Thus, it becomes necessary to find a way to finish off your exam syllabus without compromising your 8 hours of sleep.

How should you get these necessary hours of sleep and manage your syllabus?

Here are a few tips from a fellow struggler who was able to overcome this challenge using the following-

  1. Get yourself a planner well in advance. Being ahead of time will help you plan much better and it will be easier for you to follow it. Even if you lag behind on something you will have enough time to come back to it later.
  2. Write down the syllabus you need to complete for each subject. This will not only give you some direction but also remind you how much you have left. After completing a chapter, tick it off your syllabus.
  3. Feel free to add subtopics of a chapter in your planner. This will break it down for you so that you can estimate how much time it would take you to finish the chapter. This worked really well for me because if a chapter ever got too much for me, I would leave the last 1 or 2 subtopics and move on to the next; however, since those subtopics were not ticked in my planner, I always remembered to come back to them later.
  4. Make a week-wise timetable, with necessary breaks, and follow it religiously in order to effectively manage your time. You can use the Google Calendar app; it is what I used and it was extremely helpful because it gave me reminders too! For more useful study resources, check out this blog.
  5. Make sure to keep your goals for the week/day realistic. If you expect too much from yourself, not reaching said goals may demotivate you. This was a mistake I always made and I hope that after reading this you will avoid it.
  6. If you want, add a reward for yourself at the end of every week or maybe at the end of every day too! This worked for me because I had something to look forward to once I completed a certain portion of my syllabus.
  7. Prioritize – put away your distractions, be it your phone, food (a huge distraction, at least for a foodie like me) etc. while you are studying. This is actually one of the most helpful tips. Everyone knows they should do this but actually executing it will really help you focus.
  8. The sense of satisfaction you will get when you tick off topics on your syllabus sheet will naturally motivate you to do more 🙂

If you follow these, you will be able to manage your time much better. This will allow you time for studies as well as recreational activities, and the need to pull all-nighters may vanish altogether!

Pro Tip– Try to start studying early in the morning. Your focus will be much more and by lunchtime, you will already feel like you have accomplished a lot. Trust me, I have tried studying from 2-6 am without sleep telling everyone that I study better at night, but the amount I could study that way compared to what I could early in the morning differed by leaps and bounds.

Happy Studying!

What Makes Captain America a Public Speaking Maestro?

It’s been two years since Captain America dropped the now-iconic “Whatever it Takes” speech in Avengers: Endgame. Cap’s speech, delivered before the Avengers’ final battle, wowed the cinema hall and willed the Avengers to victory.

But exactly what makes Captain America such an Effective Public Speaker?

Well, In today’s blog, we look at 6 Practices that make Captain America a Public Speaking Maestro.

1. Know your audience

Cap knows that before speaking, he must understand the needs and expectations of his audience. His audience is a group of battle-hardened veterans that have all lost loved ones and are about to face the biggest challenge of their lives. They are filled with nervousness and foreboding.

2. Defined Rhetoric

Understanding their nervousness, Cap deduces that what they need right now is inspiration, steady nerves, trust and a clear goal. So he appeals to their personal loss to assert the importance of the moment. He emphasises the spirit of teamwork and acknowledges the difficulty of the task, but assures them of his confidence in their victory.

3. Clear Structure

Cap knows that to inspire and drive action, his words can’t be all over the place. Therefore, he starts his speech with a clear introduction, where he lays out the context. He then proceeds to the main body, explaining what they can do now and how. Finally, he concludes with a punch, boosting the team’s morale and while highlighting the stakes.

4. Delivery and Voice Modulation

Understanding his audience’s tense mood, Cap’s delivery is loud, clear and overall, the embodiment of stability. He speaks slowly and surely, never gives in to unsteady emotions and makes sure to include well-timed pauses after important points so that the message hits home.

5. Body language

A major chunk of communication takes place through non-verbal cues. Cap is aware of this and his body language exudes calm and confidence. He maintains a firm demeanour and makes deliberate eye contact with his audience, making the exchange that much more intimate and his message that much more powerful.

6. PRACTICE!

Mark Twain once said, “It usually takes me more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.” Cap has turned this quotation into his mantra. Whenever he is signed up for a film, he makes sure to deliver as many speeches as possible. It is with this accumulated knowledge that he is able to make his craft reach perfection.

P.S.
