The Trap: Judging a Program by Its Brochure

Every year, around March, the same inbox flood begins. Glossy PDFs. Instagram reels with drone shots of a campus. A list of “partner universities” in bold font. Testimonials from students who “found their passion in just two weeks.” By the time a parent sits down to actually compare three or four options, every single one looks equally impressive, because they’re all optimised to look impressive.

This is the trap: evaluating a summer program the way you’d evaluate an ad, on production quality and confidence of claims, rather than on the handful of things that actually predict whether your child will walk away having learned something real. A well-designed brochure costs money. It doesn’t cost the program anything to print a university’s name next to a workshop that has nothing to do with that university’s faculty.

It’s not entirely the parents’ fault. Most people evaluating these programs are doing it for the first time, under time pressure, often while also managing school deadlines, other applications, and a teenager who has strong but vague opinions about where their friends are going. The programs know this. Decision fatigue favours whichever option simply looks most finished: the best website, the most polished video, the longest list of past attendees’ logos. None of that is a reliable signal of what actually happens once your child is in the room.

The good news is that once you know what to actually check, the gap between a genuinely well-run program and a well-marketed one becomes very easy to see.

The Myth: More Prestige on the Cover Means More Value Inside

Parents often assume that the number of recognisable names on a brochure (universities, cities, sponsors) is a reasonable proxy for quality. It isn’t. A university’s name can appear on a program in wildly different ways: the university runs it directly, a faculty member is genuinely involved as a mentor, a single guest lecture was recorded, or, most loosely, the program simply rented a room on campus for a week. All four get described as “in partnership with,” and only one or two of those actually put your child in front of real expertise.

The same is true for “industry experts.” A one-time, thirty-minute video call is technically an industry interaction. It’s not the same as a mentor who reviews a student’s actual work across several sessions and gives specific feedback. There’s a similar sleight of hand with “global” or “international”: a program can technically be international because one guest speaker dialled in from abroad, or it can be international because the actual mentors, judges, or faculty are based in different countries and are involved throughout, not just for one session. The word on the brochure doesn’t tell you which one you’re getting.

The checklist below exists precisely to separate these.

The Checklist: What to Actually Verify

  1. Who is teaching, and are they still practising? Ask for the names and current designations of the people your child will actually learn from, not just an advisory board listed for credibility. A retired professor who hasn’t published in a decade teaches differently than someone actively working in the field. For instance, a well-run STEM-focused research bootcamp will name the specific researcher mentoring each track, along with their current institution and area of active work, rather than a vague “our expert faculty.”
  2. Is the university or industry link real, or just a venue? Ask directly: is the university co-designing the curriculum, sending faculty to teach, or simply hosting the event on its campus? A genuine academic collaboration usually shows up in the content, in assignments, frameworks, and evaluation criteria borrowed from that institution, not just the logo. A sports-career program built with a university’s sport management faculty should be able to show you which specific modules came from that faculty, not just a group photo on the lawn.
  3. What does your child actually produce? A certificate at the end tells you the program ran. It doesn’t tell you what your child built, wrote, argued, or solved. Look for programs that end in something concrete: a written piece, a pitch, a prototype, a portfolio, a case competition submission. A conference-style program, like an Ivy League-affiliated Model UN, should produce position papers, resolutions, and a debate record your child can actually point to later, not just a participation badge.
  4. How big are the groups, and who gets speaking time? A fifty-student “seminar” with one facilitator is a lecture, not mentorship. Ask about group sizes for the parts of the program that matter most: feedback sessions, project reviews, one-on-one check-ins. A genuinely mentorship-driven program, whether it’s a young authors’ challenge working toward publishable writing or an innovation lab building a prototype, should be able to tell you exactly how many students each mentor is responsible for.
  5. Is the content built for the actual age group? A program designed for undergraduates, lightly reworded for high schoolers, tends to either bore younger students with pacing or overwhelm them with assumed background knowledge. Ask what’s genuinely different about the version your child would attend versus a college-level version of the same topic, not just a shorter schedule.
  6. What happens after the program ends? Strong programs don’t disappear the day the certificate is issued. Ask whether mentors are willing to write recommendation letters based on real, specific observations of your child’s work, not a generic template. Ask whether there’s any continued access to the material, the mentor, or the community afterward. A leadership and social innovation conference that brings in a genuinely engaged outside speaker, someone actively working in the space rather than a one-off name-drop, should be able to tell you what students actually do with that access beyond the one talk.
  7. Does it fit your child, or just the resume? This is the one no brochure will ever ask you. Before signing up, ask your child to explain, in their own words, why this specific program interests them, not “it looks good for college,” but what they expect to actually be doing for two or three weeks. If they can’t answer that, the mismatch will usually show up later, either in low engagement during the program or in an application essay that reads exactly as hollow as it was to attend.
  8. Is the pricing clear, and does it match what’s included? Vague or bundled pricing is often a sign that a program hasn’t thought carefully about what it’s actually delivering. Ask what the fee covers line by line: mentorship hours, materials, accommodation if residential, any final showcase or publication cost, and be wary of programs that resist a straightforward breakdown or push hard for an immediate decision before you’ve had time to compare. A program confident in what it offers usually has no trouble explaining exactly what you’re paying for.
  9. What’s the actual duty-of-care setup, especially if it’s residential? For any program involving travel or overnight stays, this deserves more than a passing question. Ask who supervises students outside structured hours, what the adult-to-student ratio looks like at the venue itself, what the plan is for a medical issue, and who the parent’s direct point of contact is if something needs attention mid-program. A residential AI-focused lab held on a boarding school campus should be able to answer this specifically and immediately; a program that hasn’t thought it through will speak in generalities about “full support” without naming a person or a process.

Beyond the Brochure: Comparing Programs the Right Way

None of this means every high-profile program is hollow, or that every small, lesser-known one is a hidden gem. Some large, well-known options, like Stanford’s pre-collegiate summer institutes or the British Council’s summer school offerings in India, are genuinely well-structured for the students they’re built for. The point isn’t to distrust scale or recognition; it’s to stop treating recognition as a substitute for verification.

Different organisations also tend to be strong in different areas, which is worth factoring in rather than assuming any one program should cover everything. Some are built specifically around structured, mentor-led research tracks. Others focus on competitive, conference-style formats like Model UN, where the value comes from live negotiation and public speaking under pressure. Still others are built around a single intensive craft: writing toward real publication, building a working AI prototype over ten days, or training specifically for a sport-adjacent career path with faculty from a sport management program.

The families who get the best outcomes over several years aren’t the ones who guess right every time. They’re the ones who ask the same sharp questions consistently, regardless of how good the brochure looked.
